RIJEKA -- Unknown attackers broke into an Orthodox church in Rijeka on Wednesday, according to a local eparchy statement.
The culprits broke into and desecrated the Church of Saint George the Great Martyr in Trsat, in Rijeka.
One door of the church's southern wing had been smashed in with an axe, through which the burglars had entered and taken objects used exclusively for liturgies – a cross, two Archangels, one of which was hewn from silver, a set of priest’s robes, two icons and about 100kg of candles.
“The material damage is significant and is still being established,” according to the statement, while it is assumped that the break-in took place between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.. The incident was reported by church official, Mićo Kostić.
