BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) - The Serbian Orthodox Church has held a memorial service for Nobel Prize winner Alexander Solzhenitsyn and praised him as a friend of the Serbian people.
The service was held at Saborna Crkva or the Cathedral Church in the Serbian capital Belgrade. Many prominent Serbs attended.
Bishop Atanasije said Solzhenitsyn was «a man who experienced all the evils of this world and none had defeated him.
The bishop said in Wednesday's service that the Serbian church was grateful to Solzhenitsyn for «his love toward us.
Solzhenitsyn reportedly criticized Western support for Kosovo's independence from Serbia.
The famed Russian dissident died on Sunday. He was buried Wednesday in Russia.
