Police in Jinja are holding an Orthodox Church priest for allegedly operating a fake study centre he claimed to be affiliated to Kampala University.
Fr. Leonard Lubega was arrested on August 8 in Jinja. Police says he has been on the run for about three months and an arrest warrant issued against him by court.
The cleric attached to the Uganda Orthodox Church Parish of Jinja has, according to police, been admitting students pretending that he would enroll them to the University's Jinja Branch that he opened in October last year. He apparently did this without the knowledge and consent of the vice chancellor and management of the mother institution.
"He has been enrolling students for direct courses with the university without remitting the money to the main campus," Mr Fred Eriku the officer in charge of investigations at Jinja Central Police told Daily Monitor.
Police action followed a complaint by the affected students and Kampala University's Vice Chancellor Badru Kateregga. "When Prof Kateregga got to know that he (Fr Lubega) was fraudulently running an institution in Jinja, he complained to us," Mr Eriku said. Police say Fr. Lubega, who has been taking about Shs500,000 from each student, will be prosecuted.
