2007-11-29

Director of the Solovetskii Historical and Architectural Museum, Mikhail Lopatkin, says he doubts that all of the Solovki archipelago will be transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church.

Russian Minister of Culture Mikhail Shvidkov last week said to Russian media that a deal on the transfer of about all of the Solovki had been made with Patriarch Aleksii II.
Mr. Lopatkin still doubts that the Church will get supreme control over the islands. –We are talking about the transfer of memorials, and negotiations will have to be held in order to decide exactly which, he said to Rosbaltnord.ru.
He added that a major part of the memorials have already been transferred to the Church. He also sees positive a positive side of the development. –Finally they have begun to take decisions, this is important, because the lack of a strategy on the Solovki memorials is bad, he said, adding that it now finally will be possible to determine who owns and is responsible for what.
