BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) - Hundreds of gays and lesbians have marched through Bucharest in a show of pride.

Thousands of people gathered along the two-mile (three-kilometer) route. Some spectators cheered; others cheered.

Hundreds of police patrolled the march. The atmosphere was tense but there were no reports of arrests. At a similar event last year, about 140 people were arrested.

Earlier Saturday, supporters of the New Right anti-gay movement marched to protest homosexuality.

The Romanian Orthodox Church, the dominant church in the country, opposes homosexuality. But the government decriminalized homosexuality in 2001.
