Reports say that the Orthodox Saint George’s Church in Kakhi, the only one in Saingilo region of Azerbaijan, largely populated with people of Georgian descent, was locked by local Azeri residents. They took away keys from the pastor, locked the door and warned local Georgians from attempts to conduct Christian service in the church.
‘There certainly are forces in Azerbaijan looking for deterioration of relations between Georgia and Azerbaijan’, Zviad Dzidziguri, leader of the opposition Conservative Party said at the press conference on Monday.
According to him, it was not the first action taken against Orthodox churches. The brutal actions were frequent against the David Gareji Monastery Complex in the Georgina-Azeri border zone, when frescoes were vandalised.
