COLUMBUS -- The leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Egypt is out of the hospital and has consecrated a church altar in Columbus. Pope Shenouda III was scheduled to visit St. Mary's Coptic Church in Columbus last week. But he was taken to the Cleveland Clinic on January 28th with an undisclosed illness.
The cleric suffers from chronic cholecystitis, or stones in his gall bladder that cause a high fever and severe pain.
Shenouda appeared tired but mobile as he moved around the sanctuary at St. Mary's yesterday. He drew crosses on the church's 3-year-old altar and prayed in Arabic and English.
The Coptic Church is the native Christian church of Egypt, and has a doctrine similar to Greek Orthodox and Russian Orthodox churches.
